P1 Christmas K’Nex Workshop

Out P1 pupils attended the Christmas K’Nex Workshop at Strachan Village Hall with other P1 children from our small schools cluster. They were read the story ‘Aliens Love Panta Claus’ and then had to work in small groups to construct an alien using K’Nex as well as designing their very own pair of underpants!

Drumoak Student named as regional winner in Stamp Design Competition

Scotland 4-7 Archie Hilton Age 7

Congratulations to Archie Hilton, a regional winner of the Royal Mail’s children’s Christmas Stamp Design Competition!

From the Royal Mail’s Press Release:

“A budding artist from Banchory has moved a step further in becoming one of the designers of Royal Mail’s 2013 Christmas stamps.

As part of Royal Mail’s children’s Christmas Stamp Design competition, the entry from Archie Hilton, aged 7 from Drumoak Primary School was chosen as one of the best entries from thousands in Scotland.

Archie’s entry is one of 10 that have been shortlisted in Scotland and 140 UK wide. It will go through to the next stage of the competition where local judges will select their top two entries to represent the region in the national final.

During the national final, HRH The Prince of Wales will lead a panel of judges who will select the two designs from twenty four finalists that will feature on this year’s First and Second Class Christmas stamps. The stamps will be on sale from November 5th.

Archie has already won £100 in vouchers and £100 for his school. However, this will increase if he progresses in the competition*.

Astonishing response to the competition

Royal Mail has received an astonishing 240,000 entries from children aged 4-11-years old from across the UK in response to the question ‘What does the Christmas season mean to you?’

Entries submitted to the competition will be displayed on a special website – www.royalmailstampcompetition.com launching later this week.

Only twice before in Royal Mail’s history – 1966 and 1981 – have the official Christmas stamps been designed by children.

As with all Special Stamps issued by Royal Mail, both winning designs will have to be approved by The Queen. Other Christmas stamps for different postal rates, and a religious-themed issue, will also be available from November 5.

Note to editors

• The judges for the national final are HRH The Prince of Wales, Royal Mail’s Chief Executive Officer, Moya Greene; the author of the Charlie and Lola series, Lauren Child; Royal Mail’s Head of Stamp Design, Marcus James, and Tasveer Shemza, who was just six when she designed one of Royal Mail’s first ever Christmas stamps in 1966.

• The 12 competition regions are:
1. London
2. South East
3. East of England
4. East Midlands
